What Are the Most Common Roofing Problems?

    August 15, 2022

Roofs are one of the most durable parts of any home when they are properly installed. Unfortunately, problems can still arise. When they do, getting roof repair done quickly is your best bet. A roofer will be able to fix the issue and prevent further damage that requires costlier repairs. This article will outline the most common roofing issues that homeowners need to watch out for.

    Storm Damage

The everyday climate of an area won’t cause too many problems for a quality roof. Asphalt shingles are made to withstand UV rays, cold, heat, rain, snow, and more. Harsh storms can cause problems, however. High winds can cause shingles to tear off completely, causing future leaks during rain storms. Branches and other falling debris can cause impact damage that cracks shingles or punctures the roof. If the debris is large enough, it can cave the roof in entirely. Take preventative measures and cut down any hazardous branches and trees on your property. If there's a leak, caulk or other sealants may provide temporary relief, but it's best to call a roofer to provide a more permanent solution.

    Nail Popping

A phenomenon caused by temperature fluctuations is nail popping. In an area where the temperature goes from cold to hot in rapid succession, your home’s roofing materials will be stressed by constant expansion and contraction. There are thousands of nails in your roofing system, and the expansion can cause them to be pushed out of place. In some instances, they may pierce the shingles above and create a hole that water can leak into. It can be difficult to notice nail popping since nails are small. The best way to catch it is with routine inspections from a certified roofer.

    Clogged Gutters and Poor Drainage

Roofs are slanted to allow water to drain off them and into the gutters. The gutters then move the water to downspouts, which will carry the water away from the concrete foundation of the home. Deficiencies in this process can lead to substantial and expensive water damage. If you notice pooling on your roof, call a roofer immediately. It may indicate rot in the wood beneath the shingles. Clean out your gutters on a regular basis to make sure that water can flow freely to the downspouts. You can also invest in a gutter guard that will block debris like branches and leaves but allows water to flow through unimpeded. Make sure your downspouts lead away from your home and get your yard properly graded to carry the water beyond the foundation. Water can crack the concrete foundation, which is one of the most expensive things to repair.

    Wear and Tear

Asphalt shingle roofs can last 15-20 years, and with regular maintenance, they may even last 30 years. Still, wear and tear over time will lead to a degradation of the materials. The reflective granules on the shingles will fall off and the roof will absorb more of the UV rays from the sun. Shingles will peel and crack from the high heat, the color will fade, and moss may start to grow on the roof. If this begins happening, then your roof becomes prone to leaks, your home's energy efficiency is harmed, and it creates an eyesore that hurts the home's curb appeal. If your roof is over 10 years old, make sure you invest in yearly inspections. Eventually, you may need to invest in a replacement. Replacements can be expensive, but they offer numerous benefits like improved energy efficiency, higher resale value, and updated warranties and insurance.

According to IBISWorld, the roofing industry has grown 2.7% each year from 2015 to 2020. There are more roofing businesses than ever, but it's important to sift through them to find a high-quality roofer who can provide you with expert roofing installation, maintenance, and repairs. Call Martinez Roofing and Construction if you're looking for a reputable and reliable roofer in Iowa City.
